How to Clean a Leather Wallet at Home

Many people go years without ever cleaning their leather wallet- sometimes five, six, or even more. It’s something we use every single day, yet rarely think about maintaining. I was no different. My leather wallet went untouched for three years, collecting dirt, oils, and wear along the way.

Cleaning a leather wallet at home is easy if you follow the right steps. In this guide, I’ll explain to you how you can clean your leather wallet yourself in three simple steps. Let’s get started.

Preliminary Brush-Off

First off, let’s do a preliminary brush-off. You can use a stiffer boar hair brush to get off any stuck-on gunk.

It’s important to do this dry brush method first because it prevents dirt and grime from getting brushed further into the leather pores as you move forward.

And don’t worry about scratching your leather with a boar hair brush- any minor surface marks or micro-scratches will be buffed out later in the process.

Step 1: Cleaning

Go ahead and use your preferred, trusted leather cleaner- choose one you’re comfortable with based on your own experience.

Most of the people use a brush, but you’re more than welcome to use a soft toothbrush or a cloth instead- just make sure to be thorough.

Make sure you use enough cleaner as needed, and use different parts of your cloth (if you are using cloth) so you’re not spreading all the dirt around as you go throughout the wallet.

Don’t forget any of those nooks or crannies, especially where the cards have been. Feel free to scrub or wipe down any of the metal parts as well.

Step 2: Conditioning

Now, because we just cleaned off all of those oils, dirt, and debris, it’s vital to condition your leather afterward (do not skip this step).

Your leather needs hydration, and skipping this may lead to cracking and a shortened lifespan.

You can use some mink oil and leather cream, or you can also use shoe cream or shoe polish. Just make sure not to use too much and allow it to dry properly so it doesn’t ruin your pockets by transferring color.

Again, make sure to hydrate all of those nooks and crannies.

Conditioning Hack: Heat to Absorb Oils

Once the entire leather is covered with oil, here’s my hack for you: gently warm up the leather with a hair dryer or heat gun. You can even put it in the sun for a little bit on a warm day.

Keep in mind that the leather should only be gently warmed, not overheated. Excess heat can cause permanent damage, so avoid holding the heat in one place for too long. If it feels too hot to touch, it’s likely too hot for the leather as well.

This allows the oils to deeply penetrate the leather. Now you’ll begin to see the oils disappear from the surface once you heat it up. Massage it around and repeat the process until the leather feels well hydrated to the touch.

Make sure not to use too much oil, or it will transfer onto your clothes or bag.

Brushing & Finishing Touches

Brush your leather wallet with a horsehair brush to evenly disperse the oils and create a nice, like-new shine.

Remember: it’s about friction, not force.

Any loose threads- go ahead and snip them off and heat-seal them with a flame to prevent them from coming further undone.

To help extend the life of your wallet, gently wipe it down with a slightly damp cloth every few months or at least once a year. Avoid using too much moisture, and condition the leather afterward just as you’ve done here.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Cleaning a Leather Wallet

  • Avoid exposing leather items to direct heat, intense sunlight, or prolonged humidity. This can cause drying, fading, or warping.
  • You should avoid using harsh chemicals such as acetone, alcohol, or disinfectant sprays, as they weaken and damage the leather surface.
  • We never recommend machine wash leather wallets, or accessories.
  • Always store leather wallets in breathable fabric pouches. This will allow proper air circulation and prevent moisture buildup.

Final Tip: Don’t Overstuff Your Wallet

Above all, guys- I know we all have this problem- do not overstuff your wallet.

Look, friends, I know you want to keep those coupons and membership cards from three years ago, but I took the first step and threw them away myself. I know you can do it too.

Looking good, Joe. Looking good.

See you guys in the next post, and remember to love your leather.
